Managing the Complicated Lyme Patient in the Membership Model
Feb 09, 2024In our recent clinical class, we delved into the intricate process of managing patients with complex health conditions.
Understanding Lyme Disease
The focus of our discussion was on navigating the challenges posed by Lyme disease, a multi-system infectious disease syndrome. We explored how Lyme disease, along with co-infections like Bartonella and Mycoplasma, can lead to neurologic damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, and hormonal imbalances.
Functional Medicine Approach
Identifying the Culprit
The question arises: How do we manage this intricate web of chronic diseases rooted in various infections? At Origins Incubator, we advocate for a functional medicine approach, emphasizing the importance of not just targeting the infectious agents but also building up the patient simultaneously.
Stepwise Process
In our class, we broke down the process, starting with identifying the specific bug through comprehensive testing. Once the culprit is identified, we discussed the botanicals and biofilm considerations that work best. Understanding the immune system's role in the process, we emphasized the need to consider it in the treatment plan.
Building the Patient
Crucially, we highlighted the paradigm of first building the patient. This involves a foundational assessment, considering the basics, and then addressing specific issues related to the identified infection. For instance, Lyme disease often leads to neurologic damage; hence, we explored strategies to improve tissue integrity, especially focusing on the myelin sheath.
Mitochondrial and Hormonal Considerations
Recognizing the mitochondrial impact of these infections, we discussed go-to approaches for mitochondrial disorders. Additionally, we delved into hormonal considerations, with a spotlight on adrenal fatigue due to chronic stress and its impact on other hormonal systems.
Simplifying the Complex
Breaking down these complex issues into manageable components, we illustrated a stepwise approach. By dissecting the intricate puzzle of chronic diseases into digestible bits, we transform an overwhelming world into actionable steps. This not only aids in our understanding but empowers the patient to manage their health effectively.
Emphasis on Collaboration at Origins Incubator
At Origins Incubator, we pride ourselves on fostering a collaborative environment where healthcare professionals can discuss everything from clinical situations to running functional medicine practices. It's remarkable how working together in our cohort allows us to navigate the challenges of patient care and share insights that enhance our collective knowledge. Join us in this journey where we build both patients and professionals, turning the impossible into achievable steps.
