Introduction

Dr. Cheryl Burdette, Educational Director

In the dynamic realm of Origins Incubator's clinical curriculum, we, led by Dr. Cheryl Burdette, embarked on a recent case discussion focused on bloating and gut-related events. We looked at a case of bloating that was unresponsive to antimicrobials and looked for other possible root cause explanations. Through this journey, we also were impacted by the significance of collaborative problem-solving within our community.

The Initial Steps and The Challenge of Follow-ups

Navigating the complexities of patient care can be tricky, especially when a patient is not willing to follow through with the suggested path for healing. We acknowledge the initial steps in patient care might seem straightforward, but the real challenge emerges during follow-ups when responses prove elusive. In Origins Incubator, we understand the true depth of this challenge, and we know we can find solutions together as we have fostered a unique collaborative environment.

The Power of Community

Thankfully, we draw strength and wisdom from our collective insight. Origins Incubator provides a weekly meeting ground, where each of us brings forth challenging cases. Here, we collaborate together openly, making it a place where difficult cases find collective solutions and shared knowledge accelerates our learning curve.

Unpacking a Challenging Case

Delving into a recent case, positive indicators for gut-based bacteria, including Clostridium, failed to bring about the expected improvement. Despite aggressive treatments, no change occurred, prompting us to delve deeper. Adding to this, the patient did not want to follow some recommendations, which obviously hindered healing. The patient's recent stress and reluctance to consult a therapist added new dimensions to the case. We unraveled the layers together beyond gut bacteria.

The Collaborative Power of Partnerships

Collaboration took center stage as we highlighted our partnership with Dr. Linda Matteoli and the vast tools she has provided within our curriculum. Dr. Matteoli's wealth of knowledge, shared techniques, and resources from her own thriving practice contribute to our collective growth within Origins Incubator. Together, we left no stone unturned and were able to address all aspects of the given case.

Tools for Navigating Stress

Dr. Matteoli's handout became a focal point, offering guidance on addressing trauma as an obstacle. The collaborative exploration included various apps, recommended books, and stress reduction techniques, streamlining the process for us and ensuring we have a curated set of resources. These tools and more are available and easily accessible to all in our Incubator Cohort.

Probiotics, Thyroid Function, and Ashwagandha

The case's shift towards anxiety-induced bloating led to discussions on probiotics, low thyroid function, and the potential benefits of ashwagandha. We explored the interconnected nature of stress and thyroid function in contributing to the patient's symptoms to get to the bottom of it.

Candida Exploration and Follow-up Tests

With no improvement in the patient's bloating, our Origins Incubator cohort contemplated a presumptive approach, exploring Candida overgrowth due to previous antibiotic use. We outlined the subsequent steps, suggesting follow-up tests such as stool tests or SIBO tests to uncover the root cause, knowing that next actions are crucial for healing.

The Essence of Community Collaboration

Thankfully, with the tools we provide through Incubator, along with with our discussion format and mentoring, we are able to give actionable steps to practitioners, even for the most difficult cases. Origins Incubator thrives on continuous collaboration, where we share handouts, tools, and references, creating a supportive network. This collaborative environment streamlines the process, providing us with go-to resources and boosting our confidence in patient care.

An Invitation to Join

In conclusion, we extend a warm invitation to join the vibrant discussions at Origins Incubator's clinical curriculum. Our community offers a space to share experiences, discuss cases, and collectively elevate the standards of patient care. We also provide a blueprint for which to build and grow a thriving functional practice.

Origins Incubator stands as a testament to the power of our collaboration, where we unite to unravel complexities, share insights, and ultimately foster a community dedicated to advancing healthcare practices.
